Skipping right over winter, spring seems to be upon us. So much for a "Miracle March". The good news is that salvage operations have been moving ahead on the King Fire, as there was no snow to impede planning or on-the-ground operations. The bad news is that we are facing another dry and potentially dangerous summer.
On the topic of the King Fire, Forest Forum President Roberts Little has been coordinating with landowners/managers to plan the Annual Field Trip and Barbeque, scheduled for Saturday, May 16th. Details will be sent out soon, but the route will focus on the southern portion of the Fire, as accessed from Ice House Road.
In other news, the forestry profession lost one of its own recently. On February 27, 2015, Placer County forester Doug Ferrier died after a short illness. A $500 fundraising effort is underway to pay for a plaque that will be mounted at the Dutch Flat Swimming Pool, where Doug volunteered to organize volunteers to help maintain and make improvements to the swimming pool. To make a donation, make your check payable to John Ramirez (Director of the Placer County Parks Division) and mail it to 101 Maple St., Auburn, CA 95603.
The Amador-El Dorado Forest Forum is a group of forestry professionals, forestry educators, and others interested in forestry practices and issues. The Forum meets once a month at various locations in the two-county area. The Forum awards scholarships to local college students majoring in Forestry and sponsors the California Forestry Challenge. Everyone is welcome to join our group. We have great dinner meetings, an annual Blanket Party, and participate in El Dorado County Farm Day. For complete details on upcoming Forest Forum meetings, go to the "Forest Forum Mtgs." page.
